Step 1

First things first on this road to success. Hopefully these steps, starting with this one & the ones to follow, get me to where I want to be. Each post on my road to success is going to be entitled with the number of the step. This is Step 1.

Step one should be simple. It should be a given. This should be common knowledge and common sense. However, so it seems, it is not. They say the average person tells about four lies a day. This may be true, but I doubt that the surveys given to come up with that statistic included any questions about how many lies a person tells his or her self.

Someway, somehow, we seem to have forgotten how to be real with ourselves. This is something that I preach daily, because I witness it so often. However, I did not start realizing it until I caught myself in a lie.

That gut-feeling you get when you're doing something that you know is against your character or is opposite your life philosophy, that little voice that you push to the side while you continue to partake in these malevolent actions that are against any promises you made to yourself... that sense of "hmm, I might regret this in the near future" THAT. We need to stop fucking around and listen to that.

Lying to yourself is amongst the most counterproductive things you could do. It slows you down and is pretty nonsensical to me.

So step 1? Got to let go of the lies, excuses, and bullshit that we tell ourselves.
Lemme give yall an example.

"My homework wont be done if I go out tonight, but if I do good on the test it'll make up for it. Plus, my team just won, so I deserve to celebrate."

Now lets analyze this statement. "My homework wont be done if I go out tonight," the first portion of the sentence seems like we're being very honest with ourselves. We're off on a good start. We know that our homework won't be finished if we decide to go out. Let's take a look at the rest of the statement.

"but if I do good on the test it'll make up for it." BUT. Any truthful statement followed by the word "but" is usually void, and the words following it become the only words that matter. IF. if, meaning that there is no promise I'll do good. Now the next part, "it'll make up for it," is relative because depending on your other grades, a good test grade might not necessarily save you.

"Plus, my team just won, so I deserve to celebrate." Now, we are justifying the lie to make it sound more appealing in our heads. You know you didn't contribute shit to that team winning besides watching the game. Yet, you still would rather go out and celebrate than stay in and do homework.

Just be honest with yourself. "I feel like going out, fuck my homework. It might affect my grade, but fuck my grade, I wanna go out tonight." Simple, right? You know what the affect of your decisions going to be. There's no point in buttering it up for yourself.

Always remember. Lying takes far more effort and energy than telling the truth. When you lie to yourself, you're wasting energy on yourself because you know that you know the truth of the situation. It's pointless. Let's get rid of that habit, so that we could possibly move on to success.
